Hazrat Adam [A.S] - Safi'ullah, the Chosen of Allah

Narrated by Hazrat Abu Hurairah, the Holy Prophet  said:

“Allah created Adam, making him 60 cubits tall. When He created him, He said to him, ‘Go and greet that group of angels & listen to their reply, for it will be your greeting (salutation) and the greeting of your offspring.’
So, Adam said (to the angels), ‘Assalamu Alaikum (peace be upon you)’. The angels said, ‘Assalamu Alaika wa Rahmatullah’ (peace and Allah's Mercy be upon you). Thus the angels added to Adam's salutation the expression, ‘Wa Rahmatullah'. Any person who will enter Paradise will resemble Adam (in appearance and figure). People have been decreasing in stature since Adam's creation.”

[Sahih Bukhari, Hadith no. 543]

Creation of the First Man

Hazrat Adam was the first man created and so he was also the first Prophet of Allah. The Holy Quran tells us that he was created from clay:

"The example of Isa with Allah is like that of Adam; He created him (Adam) from clay and then said to him, “Be” - and it thereupon happens!"
[Surah Al-Imran, verse 59]

"And recall when your Lord said to the angels, "I will create man from sounding clay made out of black odorous mud."
[Surah Al-Hijr, verse 28]

And he was created to rule on Earth:

"And (remember) when your Lord said to the angels, "I am about to place My Caliph in the earth"; they said, "Will You place (as a caliph) one who will spread turmoil in it and shed blood? Whereas we glorify You with praise and proclaim Your Sanctity"; He said, "I know what you do not."
[Surah Al-Baqara, verse 30]

Shaitan's Pride & Arrogance

Once Hazrat Adam had been created & appointed as the first Prophet, Almighty Allah ordered the angels to bow down before Hazrat Adam and thus, accept his superiority.
All of them obeyed Allah’s command, except Shaitan (also called Iblis) whose pride made him refuse Allah's orders and instead, he sai proudly, “I refuse to bow down before this man who is made of clay, because I am made of fire and so I am better than him.”

"And (remember) when We ordered the angels to prostrate before Adam, so they all prostrated, except Iblis (Satan/devil); he refused and was proud - and became a disbeliever."
[Surah Al-Baqara, verse 34]

Almighty Allah disapproved of such attitude from Shaitan & the disrespect that he showed towards His Prophet Adam, and so Shaitan was expelled him from Allah’s court till the end of time.
Shaitan will continue to be cursed till the Day of Judgement, when eventually he and all his accursed followers will be thrown into Hell.

Shaitan's Bitter Revenge

Allah also created a wife for Hazrat Adam called Hawa (or Eve) who he was to live with. Allah sent both of them to Paradise where there were many luxuries including fresh, delicious fruit and other great sources of comfort. Almighty Allah allowed them to live there and to eat and drink whatever they wished.
However, He forbade them to go near one particular tree, and instructed them that this was out of bounds for them.

"And We said, "O Adam! You and your wife dwell in this Garden, and eat freely from it wherever you please - but do not approach this tree for you will become of those who transgress."
[Surah Al-Baqara, verse 35]

Meanwhile, the accursed Shaitan was bitter over his expulsion and searing with hate. Instead of accepting his faults and seeking Allah’s forgiveness, he became adamant with anger and pride.

Believing that Hazrat Adam and Hazrat Hawa were the reason for his expulsion from Allah’s Court, he decided to take revenge by deceiving them into eating fruit from the forbidden tree and thus, hoping Almighty Allah would become angry at them too.

Eventually, he approached them both with an air of innocence and said, “Do you know why Allah has given you everything in Paradise except for that certain tree? Fact is, that is a great tree which gives such fruit that anyone who eats of it will never die. He will become an angel. I am telling you this, only because I am your friend and well-wisher.”

Deceived by the innocent words & expression, Hazrat Adam and Hazrat Hawa proceeded to eat the fruit of this forbidden tree. As soon as they did so, their bodies were stripped of the heavenly attire and they were left naked, covering themselves with nothing but tree leaves.

Hazrat Adam's Life & Death on Earth

However, unlike Shaitan, they immediately realized that they had committed a grave mistake and that they had displeased their Lord. Out of remorse and shame, they began seeking Allah's forgiveness - and this is an act loved by Allah so He forgave them, informing them also that Shaitan was their open enemy and that they should not be deceived by Him.

"Then Adam learnt from his Lord certain words (of revelation), therefore Allah accepted his repentance; indeed He only is the Most Accepting of Repentance, the Most Merciful."
[Surah Al-Baqara, verse 37]

"They both submitted, "Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves; so if You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, then surely, we are of the losers."
[Surah Al-Araf, verse 23]

After this incident, Almighty Allah sent both Hazrat Adam and Hazrat Hawa to live on Earth and to spend their time in virtue.

"So the devil destabilised them in it and removed them from where they were - and We said, "Go down, one of you is an enemy to the other; and for a fixed time you shall stay on earth and feed in it."
[Surah Al-Baqara, verse 36]

Thus Hazrat Adam (A.S) was the first Messenger of Allah.

It is reported that he died on a Friday, and his wife Hazrat Hawa passed away a year after him. He is thought to have lived for a total of one thousand years - 957 years on earth and 43 years in Paradise.
